Why Not Let Someone Else Take the Pictures

First cameras became simple and cheap and many decided to be their own amateur photographer. Then digital photography took over and the average person can now take the pictures and print the results cheaper than they formerly let others do it. In spite of this, there are some good reasons, at least sometimes, to let others do the picture taking.

The first problem with being the chief photographer is that you must always be looking for the ‘perfect shot’ instead of enjoying what is happening. If you’re going to do a good job, you must think like a photographer. Yet, when you get done, you have a set of good pictures but no memories of what happened? Recently we got a call to watch a TV station to see our granddaughter in a parade. I spent the time trying to get the camera to focus on the TV and missed seeing her. Now I wish I had just enjoyed the moment and let them do the picture taking.

Agreed, the electronics in cameras make them very versatile. However, it can be difficult to keep straight how to make the camera do what you want. What do all the icons on top mean? Do you know how to turn on or off the auto focus or flash? What does TV, P, M, or Av mean? Unless you use these features regularly, you will find it difficult to keep it all in your mind, and if you don’t the features are as good as missing from the camera.

If you are going to be the photographer at an event, you will need to get in some conspicuous place so you can get just the right angle. Further, many people are self-conscious and don’t like their picture taken. Then you will coax them, tease them, bribe them, trick them until you can get the memory. Wouldn’t it be nice if someone else were the bad guy next time?

So you do it anyway and get a camera full of shots. Now guess who will get requests for CDs full of pictures, as if you have plenty of free time to dedicate to this. Or they may be sending you an email asking you to post the pictures online or send them as attachments to your email.

But it’s more than just the time involved. Though digital photography need never be printed, some friends simply don’t have access to this media. For them you will need to buy photographic paper and lots of ink for your printer. Are you without a printer? In that case, make sure you get one that has six or more different color cartridges since you will be replacing each one often.

If you want to look like a tourist, by all means hang a camera around your neck and draw it to your eye regularly. People will be sure to get the message that your pictures are more important to you than they are.

If you have a plugged toilet, you get a plunger and fix it. But if a major problem arises, you call a plumber to fix it. This principle also applies to photography. Of course you don’t want to throw away your camera. But also relax and enjoy life and, at least sometimes, let others make the photo recordings.

When you want your photos done right, choosing the best photographer for your needs is worth the investment. If you follow the principles above, you will likely be glad you had it done professionally.
